In this conference, Dr Kang Chang Wei, Deputy Director of Fluid Dynamics department of IHPC, A*Star will be one of the keynote speakers, with the abstract of his talk is shown below:

Title: Dispersion of Evaporating Cough Droplets in Tropical Environment

Abstract:

During a respiratory event, in this case, a cough, virus laden droplets and aerosols are expelled from an infected person’s mouth. Respiratory droplets/aerosols’ dynamical behaviour shows the competing effects between drag, inertia, gravity and evaporation. The droplet in-flight characteristics and final destination are affected by a range of factors and interdependent interaction between them. It includes complex flow phenomena, from turbulent jets, flow-induced droplets/aerosols dispersion and sedimentation, to droplet evaporation and deposition. Modelling and simulation-based fundamental thermo-fluid physics could provide accurate insight and visualise the droplets/aerosols dynamics and spread process. A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC)’s Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) framework includes but not limited to expulsion force of fluid volume, droplet/aerosol size distribution, evaporation of water from the droplet (temperature and humidity dependent), and viral load in the droplet. Utilising this computational framework, quantifying droplets falling on human subjects will be assessed. It allows risk-based analysis across different configurations and scenarios. The fundamental knowledge of the underlying physics, together with use cases will be shared in this talk.

Event: CoolestSG-IBPSA Joint Webinar on Cooling Energy Modelling of Smart Buildings – Opportunities and Challenges

IBPSA-Singapore is collaborating a webinar event with CoolestSG on Cooling Energy Modelling of Smart Buildings – Opportunities and Challenges.

Event Time:                             6 November, 2020 at 2.00pm – 4:00pm,

Venue:                                    Online Seminar (to be sent few days before the event date)

PEB – PDU Points:                   2 CPD Points

SGBC-GMAP CPD Points:       6 CPD Points

Brief Info:

In this joint webinar by CoolestSG (Cooling Energy Science and Technology Singapore) and IBPSA (International Building Performance Simulation Association), opportunities and challenges with energy modelling of smart buildings will be discussed. In the first part Dr Adrian Chong will introduce two open source R packages ‘eplusr’ and ‘epwshiftr’ to enable climate change research and data driven analytics using EnergyPlus. The objectives are to provide better and more seamless integration between EnergyPlus simulation engine, data- driven analytics, and climate change projections; and take advantage of the abundant statistical and data analytics packages on R. In the second part, Prof SK Chou will speak on building envelope performance modelling. The building envelope is the first level of defence against heat transmission into the air-conditioned space, and, to be certified energy efficient, a building will need to have its envelope meet the minimum thermal performance standard. Recent development to enhance the envelope performance criteria will be discussed.

Brief Info:

Funded by Singapore Sustainable Blueprint (SSB) Programme, a R&D project entitled “Computer Assisted CFD Simulation to Promote Positive Energy School (PES) Project in Singapore” has been carried out by research team from IHPC and collaborators from BCA, since Dec 2017. This R&D project is well aligned with the PES campaign advocated by BCA recently.

In this seminar, Mr. Selvam VILLIAPAN from BERII of BCA, who is the key officer in charge of PES project, will be invited to give an overview of the PES Project and progress achieved so far. After that, Dr. GE Zhengwei and Dr. OOI Chin Chun from IHPC, ASTAR, who are the leading scientists for the SSB-funded project, will present their major CFD efforts and findings throughout their 3-year study. This seminar is targeted at all participants from building practitioners, policy makers, ESD consultants, architects and planners, as well as researchers and students who are interested in relevant topics.
